What Beach Life keeps

Beach Life is built to know as little about you as it can. Here's what it keeps, and why. Last updated .

The display

It shows public information: tides, forecasts and weather alerts, the beach flag, the 30A events calendar and the sunset.

It sends our service its settings and favorites, and basic health so problems can be spotted early: its version, how long it's been on, its Wi-Fi signal strength and how fresh its data is. It never sends your Wi-Fi network's name or password.

The display has no camera, and Beach Life never turns on its microphone.

The phone app

There's no account and no password. Pairing a phone with the display's code saves a key in that phone's browser. The display's name, pages, favorites and settings are kept on our service, so every phone in the house sees the same thing.

Reset to new (on the display: Settings, About) erases the Wi-Fi, settings and favorites, and unpairs every phone.

Friends

When you start or join a circle, the households in it see your household's name and what you share: the shows you're going to, beach plans, sunset crews, polls and votes. They never see where you are.

  • Going and plans clear at midnight.
  • Polls go a day after they close. Invites expire after 7 days.
  • When the last household leaves a circle, the circle is deleted.

Vacation rentals

Beach Life for rentals is in development. When it launches, guests' first names and stay dates come from the owner's booking calendar and are erased after checkout. The display never shows guests' phone numbers, reservation details, or door and alarm codes, and rental units have no camera or microphone.

This website

No cookies, no analytics and no ads. Fonts come from Google Fonts, and Live on 30A asks NOAA and the US Naval Observatory for today's tides and sunset straight from your browser, so those services see your IP address, as with any site you visit.

When you join a list or send us a message, we keep what you type (your name, your email and anything else you add) to reply to you and to tell you about Beach Life. We don't sell it or share it. To see it or have it deleted, ask us with the contact form.

Logs

Like most online services, our hosting keeps request logs, including IP addresses, for about 30 days, to keep things secure and working.

Changes and questions
