Release notes

Changes to the display, the phone app and this website, newest first. Your display shows its version on the start-up screen and in Settings, under About.

Phone appFriends

  • Circles: start one in the new Friends tab and invite other households with a link or code. A household joins only when it accepts.
  • Going: tap Going on any of today's shows. Your circle sees who's going.
  • Beach plans and the sunset crew: say where and when. Plans show this afternoon's flag and sunset, and friends answer We're in or Maybe.
  • Polls: ask a quick question with up to four choices.
  • You choose what friends' posts look like on your display: names, initials only, or nothing. Friends see only what you share, never where you are. Displays start showing friends' posts with their next update.

Phone appYour picks

  • Your picks on the Events tab lists every artist you've starred and every venue you've pinned, not only the ones on today's calendar.
  • Tap a star or pin to take it off. Tap again to put it back.

WebsiteThe Beach Life website

  • What each page on the display shows, today's flag, events, tide and sunset on 30A, a setup guide and help.
  • How to, with animated guides for favorites, choosing and ordering pages, and swiping, tapping and holding on the display.

Display 0.3.2Steadier updates

  • Updates cope better with a weak or busy Wi-Fi connection: each piece of the download is tried again if it fails.

Display 0.3.0Ready for a new home

  • Welcome: a new display walks you through setup on its own screen, first Wi-Fi, then connecting your phone. The app then asks what to call it.
  • Nightly updates: new versions install themselves around 3 AM. You can turn this off in Settings.
  • Safer updates: a new version stays only after it gets online. If it can't, the display goes back to the version it had.
  • Reset to new (Settings, About) erases the Wi-Fi, settings, favorites and phones, for passing a display on.
  • The display reports basic health, like how long it's been on, Wi-Fi signal strength and how fresh its data is, so problems can be spotted early. It never sends network names or addresses.

Display 0.2.22Long names fit

  • Text no longer runs into other text when a value is long. The Flag & safety card sizes its columns to what's in them.
  • Also tidied: Home's UV row, Tide's labels near the now marker, rip risk on Waves (one bar per run of days, like "Sat–Tue") and the labels on the sunset map.

Display 0.2.21Phone appConnect a phone

  • On the display, Settings, Connect a phone shows a six-digit code and a QR code.
  • In the app: turn pages on or off and change their order, star artists and pin venues, and change the display, sunset and touch settings.
  • The display picks up changes within 30 seconds, and changes made on the display show up in the app.

Display 0.2.2 – 0.2.20Favorites, sunset and swipes

  • Favorites: starred artists and pinned venues move to the top of Events, with the number of picks in the title strip.
  • Sunset all day: the Sunset page stays in the cycle with the time and a countdown, a "Which way to look" map for today's sunset, and the last ten minutes played out on screen.
  • Swipe left for the next page, right for the previous one.
  • Events (it was Music), plus a More events page that joins the cycle on busy days.
  • A steadier picture, including during updates, and page dots you can read against a bright sky.

Display 0.1.0 – 0.2.1The first versions

  • Nine pages with live data: Home, Tide, Waves, Weather, Beach day, Flag & safety, Events, Sky, and Sunset & Moon, with a night look after dark.
  • The beach flag ripples with the real wind, and National Weather Service rip current risk and alerts show in a red bar.
  • Touch: tap to pause and jump to any page; the gear or a 3-second hold opens Settings.
  • An Offline screen with the last known values, and updates over Wi-Fi that undo themselves if something goes wrong.
